Termite Questions
Q:
Why is termite control important?
A:
Underground termites are active throughout Australia. You cannot see them, in fact you rarely hear about them, but termites cause more damage to homes each year than do floods, fires and storms combined. According to the CSIRO 1 in 5 homes will encounter termite damage. Termites cause $750 million damage per annum Australia wide.
Q:
Must new homes be protected from termites?
A:
New homes must be protected against termites. You should be careful, however about what you choose for your termite protection. The Building Code of Australia provides that builder’s obligations only go so far as to provide termite protection for the structural components in a home. But the code is flawed in that it does NOT exempt the builder from liability in the event of damage to fixtures and fittings. And the fact is that most claims against builders involve fixtures and fittings and the largest expense in rectification is always fixture and fittings and not the structural elements. Steel frames may not get eaten but walls, cupboards, curtains and carpets do.
Q:
Is termite damage covered by insurance?
A:
No it is not. Other forms of damage to your home may be insurable but termite damage is not. So termite control is something you need to consider from the time you start building your home.
Q:
How do termites behave?
A:
The termites that cause most damage to homes live underground. Their food is cellulose in its many forms. In natural conditions that means trees. Termites search underground for food - old wood or old trees or get into the roots of new or dead standing trees and into their core. It is during that search that termites find your home. The danger is always from underground.
Q:
What do prospective home buyers think about termite protection?
A:
They often know little about termites, nor methods of termite control are available. Their builder usually chooses the type of protection used. However you do have a choice. You can request that your builder use the Termimesh Termite Control System and be safe in the knowledge that your home is protected by a world renowned leader in physical termite barrier protection.
Q:
What sort of damage do termites cause?
A:
Termites will attack any material containing cellulose, which is generally found in timber.
Termites will enter a house unseen and will attack and destroy timber wall frames, roof timbers, bathroom cabinets, kitchen cupboards, timber door frames, electrical wiring, carpets and even furniture and books.
